Released at the tail end of 2024 (hence missing out on last year’s Annual), the Geese frontman’s solo outing hasn’t exactly quietly passed through 2025. From viral Cameron Winter lookalike pages to widespread critical acclaim, it’s likely you won’t have got very far without hearing mutterings of ‘Love Takes Miles’ around town. But it’s all deserved praise for this record of classic ballads, penned by the oddball 23 year-old Brooklynite.
With Loren Humphrey (Arctic Monkeys / Willie J Healey / Tame Impala) on production duties, Winter welcomes a nostalgic warmth on Heavy Metal. There’s distance, tape distortion and organs that could be just as at home on a Nilsson or Cohen record. But the real crux is the vocal performance. What could potentially seem slight or mundane through a lesser larynx is given a colossal sense of meaning via Winter’s, vibrato-led and deeply personal delivery.
