Movietone - Day And Night Movietone
Movietone have been one of our constants since we opened the shop in 2002. It feels like we’re always coming back to them. We’re extremely proud to be partners in Domino’s beautiful reissue of their second album, Day and Night, originally released in 1997. The vinyl edition comes with an exclusive 7” single with an unreleased track, Phonograph Space, and a semi-obscure one, Marine Oceano. Day And Night will also be available on cd.
Day And Night is a landmark record - it captures Movietone at a peak moment. It’s delicate and vivid and complicated and simple. From Bristol, they were part of the Planet Records scene of groups which included Flying Saucer Attack, Third Eye Foundation and Crescent. Their music was a bit different to all three, and to everything else going on in Bristol at the time. They belonged to themselves, everything they ever did was instantly recognisable - the slowly unwinding melodies, the mixture of instrumentation, Kate Wright’s vocal, the rhythms, the imagination. Like Broadcast or Talk Talk or Galaxie 500 they made their own world.
Maybe not quite unknown, but certainly not as well known as they should be, this reissue coincides with a new love for their music coming from NTS and adjacent radio djs, and groups like Tara Clerkin Trio who seem to have located a similar freedom to be original. Fortunately, Movietone’s Kate Wright has kept an amazing archive from the time and this reissue feels both important and personal with numerous photos and handwritten captions, as well as new liner notes from Stephen Pastel.
Even the song titles tell a story. Completely essential.
