Black Truffle
Hubris Oren Ambarchi
A decade on, Sydney-born Oren Ambarchi's Hubris returns with its surfaces burnished and inner workings newly exposed, a record that marked a decisive recalibration in his catalogue, where rhythm asserts itself with a kind of quiet authority, guitars set into motion as revolving mechanisms. The opening stretch unfolds as a slow, hypnotic current, palm-muted figures interlacing in tight formation, each layer slipping in and out of prominence with a fluid, tidal logic. Subtle shifts accumulate, synth tones glimmer at the edges, percussion tightening its grip, the pulse gathering weight with each cycle. By the final passage, that motion grows denser, more volatile, the groove thickening into a heavy, tumbling mass, textures fraying at their edges, the whole piece held in a state of mounting, near-ecstatic pressure.
