Hanna Tuulikki & Tommy Perman - Echo in the Dark Hanna Tuulikki & Tommy Perman
Echo in the Dark is a collaborative album by Hanna Tuulikki and Tommy Perman, composed entirely from bat echolocation calls and the human voice. This expanded 11-track Bandcamp edition includes three B-sides as bonus tracks: Night Whispers (Brown Long-Eared Bat), Moving Without Travelling (Barbastelle Bat) featuring Timothy Morton, and Hear and Follow (Bechstein’s Bat). The vinyl edition contains the original eight-track album and includes the full expanded digital edition.
The project began with a silent bat rave commissioned by Hospitalfield in Arbroath in 2022. Recordings of UK bat species were gathered through community listening sessions in Angus and elsewhere across the UK, then transformed into electronic compositions moving between club music, vocal experimentation and ecological listening. Each track focuses on a particular bat species or pairing, translating echolocation patterns into rhythm, melody and texture. Bat calls become basslines and vocal pulses, creating an ephemeral human–bat sound world shaped by field recordings and dance music.
Conceived as a love letter to club culture and the more-than-human frequencies around us, Echo in the Dark invites listeners to tune into the hidden rhythms of bats and hear dance music as a place where ecological imagination and bodily attention can meet.
The project was initiated by British-Finnish artist, composer and performer Hanna Tuulikki in collaboration with artist, designer and musician Tommy Perman. It brings together Tuulikki’s voice-led performance and ecological research with Perman’s electronic composition and production.
