about
"The 25th anniversary edition of debut GNAC album "Friend Sleeping", originally released in 1999. This is the first release on the "Vertical Features Reissues" imprint, with all reissue artwork by Timothy O'Donnell.
Released on vinyl for the first time ever, the album is available in two colours: pink or yellow. Mastered from the 1999 DAT by Samuel J. Smith. The inner sleeve includes a collage of archive images and track commentary.
The 2CD edition, housed in a digipack, has 26 extra tracks, and a 12 page booklet with archive images and track commentary. CD1 contains the original album, plus a five-song session recorded live in the studio in Amsterdam in October 1999. CD2 contains 21 related recordings, found on cassettes, DATs and minidiscs in the attic. Amongst these are different versions of three album tracks - the first demo of "Continental Balcony Twilight" (thought to be lost until recently), an early take of "Bad Self Portrait", and a remix of "Hennebert Sleeve" made for a cassette to accompany a Greek fanzine. Elsewhere, the tracks vary from guitar-based miniatures, to attempts to use a vintage sequencer to coax drum and bass type music from a mid-size Yamaha keyboard; a scaled down model of the one used by John Shuttleworth.
A deluxe bundle of vinyl + 2CD is available with an original GNAC card - made in 1998 - and signed on the back. (address on card no longer valid). Plus a postcard set. All contained in a GNAC stamped pillow-case.
Equipment used: All recordings were made at home between 1996-1999 onto either a Yamaha MT-100 4-track cassette recorder (many of the extra tracks) or a Roland VS-880 hard-disc recorder (album tracks and some of the extra tracks). These were then transferred to DAT master via a Sony A6 Deck. Yamaha APX-4 Electo-Acoustic Guitar, Epiphone red semi acoustic guitar, Kasuga classical guitar - modified with a pick up, all recorded via direct input. Keyboard: Yamaha PSS-790 Portasound. MIDI Sound box: Yamaha EMT-10 Sound Expander. Sequencers: Alessis MMT-8, Roland PMA-5. Effects: Roland VS8F-1 effects card in the VS-880, Yamaha R 100 Reverb Processor, Rocktek Chorus Pedal. JVC Headphones.
An ironing board was used as a keyboard stand and the recording equipment was placed on a small circular dining table, all illuminated by a floor lamp. Nearly all the recordings were made in the flat I rented above a flower shop, on a corner, in Shirley, Southampton, with a few later recordings made after a move North to Salford.
In the process of remastering the album from the original 1999 DAT for vinyl, tracks 1.4, 1.6 and 1.8 were carefully edited down to comfortably fit within 20 minutes per side. Listening back to this edited edition of the album, I am convinced it is much better for being slightly briefer, so I opted for this version on CD1 as well. However, for completeness, the original full-length versions of A.4, B.1 and B.3 will be included with all Bandcamp download editions (in a zipped folder)."
