What an irresistible pull this music has. Often Compared to Lana Del Rey, Ethel Cain’s music is far darker, drawing from both an American gothic and deep, southern, Bible belt aesthetic for concoct something utterly unique. We love Lana too of course, by Cain’s version of romanticism is fune-real and highly evocative of the lightless places where both love and tragedy blossom. Sweeping, powered by an almost otherwordly emotive resonance, this is a TOME of a record. In the towering fields of reverb and distortion you can hear hints of shoegaze and noise music, in her aching vocal performances and soft synths (as on singles Fuck Me Eyes and Nettles) the decaying ghosts of late 80s Country Music. Tracks like Fuck Me Eyes also hint at a sense of humour (black of course) while something like Knock At The Door sounds like something Marissa Nadler has been pioneering for 20 years now. Radio Towers sounds like a Stars Of The Lid transmission from a sinking submarine. It’s all magnificent, it’s our Album Of The Month.
