We’ve been very much enjoying the Errol’s Hot Wax / Watts Of Goodwill 7” series. The latest pairs San Francisco low-key legends Cindy with Comber, a Glasgow based power trio, two-thirds of whom have a side hustle on Monorail’s online team.

The Cindy side, Qui Vive, is a bit of a departure for them - it’s maybe the most European they’ve ever sounded. It seems to inhabit that spontaneous world where you’re in a room and some music breaks out and it’s a bit like a Stereolab tour single or a lo-fi Can groove or a VU boot. All of this iced with a Karina Gil semi-spoken vocal, mesmerising and slightly inpenetrable. Cindy always make you want to unravel them but they sort of prevent it too. That’s their magic. 

Comber’s magic power is a bit different. They’re a very new group that somehow feels experienced, almost like they’ve always existed. Glasgow deserves to have a new group as good as Comber and Comber definitely deserve to be in Glasgow. The way they play off each other is very special - Oscar’s winding, winning guitar lines. Lauren’s super focused clean lines drumming. And to the fore this time round is Emily with her quirky, charming vocal melody and bassline thump. bottomfeeder will hook you in no problem, this group are so special. Get in quick.

Second City Static is a collaborative project between two Glasgow based DIY labels; Errol's Hot Wax & Watts Of Goodwill. The loose plan is an irregular series of not for profit live shows at The Old Hairdresser's showcasing two artists, with a split 7” single & download card included in the price of the ticket. So far, there's been splits with the likes of Gerard Love, Lung Leg, Jill Lorean and R.AGGS.

Cindy's track Qui Vive was recorded and mixed by the group and mastered by Samuel J Smith at Green Door Studios, Glasgow. "The song is about resonance between things -- unexpected association between seeing a basketball court in the dark and a painting you remember; a scene out in the world that describes your internal scene, and vice versa; being on a bus and all the layers of what's happening around you. Resonances like that. "Qui vive" is a very old fashioned way of asking "who's there?"."

It shouldn't be your wish to date a fish. Comber are a species of marine ray-finned fish from the family of Serranidae, the sea basses. Comber are also a three piece trio-rock band from Glasgow in Scotland. Their new single 'bottomfeeder', released on the flip side of Second City Static 06, is a smirr of drums, peaceful harmonies and soft-bent guitars captured in delicate wax. I say it's a song about the sirens, lures and lighthouses, but the band say it might be about catfishing, or fish with some dog in them. A catchy little hook and perfect for reels. 'bottomfeeder' was recorded by Loup Havenith at Organic Audio in the Southside of Glasgow and also mixed by Samuel at Green Door.
