Sea Horses - 1989-1992 Sea Horses
Sailing out of the fog a 35 year obscurity, Sea Horses were a collection of musicians navigating the moats around Manchester in the late 80s and early 90s. On 1989-1992 San Francisco label House Rules has collected a smattering of utterly dream-soaked cuts from their three releases including a previously only friends and family cassette. Psychedelic, folks and swooning at the same time, Sea Horses posit a kind of Arthurian indie pop, like Fairport Convention on Sarah Records with Maurice Deebank on guitar. It’s just so divine. On vocal duties, twin sisters Jo and Liz Bromley sing with Claire Williams in a triad chorus soaring above the sparkling guitar for undeniably haunted effect.
It’s too-soft hands fondling moss on a boggy rock dreaming of love lost, its Guinevere pining after her king but set in the Rovers Return. Drawn out and jammy in all the best ways, primitive synth strings peering through a Saxon mist at a maidens in cardigans. Sea Horses somehow manage to sound classically Manc-miserable and sweetly blessed with a heavenly patina that rolls out of the speakers like candy floss drawn across the moors.
