Jon Savage's SF Sike 1966-72 Various Artists
The idea was always, like the Marry Pranksters, to go Furthur. This is the real sound of San Francisco 1966-72 as compiled by the brilliant archivist, and writer, Jon Savage.
"It was the new gold rush, but with drugs, music and freedom the goal." (JS, The Guardian August 2012). The SF scene began in 65 with garage bands and hit makers like the Beau Brummels and boomed in 1967 with two top ten hits by Jefferson Airplane and the media attention on Haight Ashbury.
JS traces the blazing trajectory from its slightly more formal start, heavier pop music mixed with a kind of utopianism, all the way through to the comedown of the early 70s - the American Dream fucked forever in a mixture of drugs burnout, Vietnam and Nixon-era politics. SF felt it hard - things went elsewhere, moved away from the Bay Area.
This compilation is the sound of Jon Savage’s own adolescence - the music he loved most in this moment. It goes from harder garage rock to spacey jams to weirdo blues workouts. The 18 tracks celebrate the great pop music and idealism of that time and feature Moby Grape, Skip Spence, Ron Nagle, Country Joe & The Fish and more.
Full contextual & track-by-track sleevenotes by Jon Savage. Ephemera & archive material from the period. Everything Jon does is done with love and enthusiasm and skill. It’s always the best way to engage with time and place.
