No Soap
Wild Cabin - Easy Country Wild Cabin
Glasgow based lo-fi, basement-y indie rock scuzz with dashes of slowcore, tape-hiss, shoegaze patinas, guitar scree and emotions spilling out all over the place. RIYL HOVVDY, Alex G, Slow Pulp, Friendship, Kelora, Peel Dream Magazine, Ovlov, Movietone.
In the Southside of Glasgow, tucked way in Morris Park amidst 30 acres of dance studios, bakeries and gym classes lies Organic Audio, a recording studio blending vintage analogue gear and modern stuff too, spearheaded by Sean Mitchell and Kieran Thomas. Since opening, the likes of Paws, Raveloe, Bleaks and Adam Ross have made the place their own for a few days. Organic is somewhat of a No Soap HQ in my head (though that’s not entirely true).
No Soap is a DIY label and promotions collective based in Glasgow, mostly focussing on curating / archiving music from Scotland’s grassroots alternative art and music scenes. Across the sound waves of Scotland (EHFM, Clyde Built), No Soap also frequently curate mixes full of local experimental music, good ol indie rock and traditional folk music (all of which you can find archived on their website).
Wild Cabin’s Easy Country - No Soap’s 11th release - was recorded at Organic by Alex, Sean and Fin. The group’s lineup, which has evolved since the recording of Easy Country two years ago, now features Loup Havenith and Simone Wilson (Hairband, Simone Antigone, Breakfast Muff).
Together they make lo-fi, basementy indie rock scuzz with dashes of slocore, tape-hiss, shoegaze patinas, guitar scree and emotions spilling out all over the place. There’s glimmers of groups like Movietone and Crescent under the surface; tempo changes and moments of hush. Tracks like Are All Days The Same? almost turn to trip-hop, all the way to Bristol and back (to Polmadie).
The cover is a picture of Alex’s Mum in the USSR (maybe in Moscow, says Fin), head to toe in winter gear - a big jacket, a beanie hat. It’s a small nod to the work No Soap do: creating a physical archive in an overly digital world. I read a book recently by Hélène Giannecchini (An Army of Lovers Cannot Fail) which kind of perfectly sums up my feelings towards human connection and archival ephemera drawing lines between generations and land. Long live No Soap.
