Season’s Greetings…
But which season? Here on King’s Court in our nook at the gateway to Glasgow’s East End we create our own world, our own time zone, our own season. From this warm and welcoming, oddball place, hello and thanks for being here with us.
Some of us here were toddlers elsewhere when the shop opened. Others have grown older and wiser behind the counter. None of that matters when you’re talking about your favourite record, an amazing gig , the stuff that fuels us and creates this world we’ve called home for 23 years.
But what of this year we’re at the embers of? We began it by pulling victory out of the jaws of defeat with a Mogwai out-store, flying in the face of a storm. We fell hard for new artists from Greenock (The Cords), Skye (Brìghde Chaimbeul), the misty recesses of dreams (Dania). We got reacquainted with old friends in imperious later career stages (Edwyn, Pete, Bob and Sarah) and others somewhere in the middle of their time.
On a personal note, my favourite thing about this job is sharing my love for music, the way it makes me feel excited, home even. At the Blood Orange in-store this year I saw 300 kids, most of whom had never been in to the shop, get excited to meet and hear a bona fide pop star. Dev bought a Pastels record from Stephen Pastel and only realised it the next day. He also stayed until way after midnight to speak to every single kid, sharing that same love and warmth. It’s a feeling and earnestness we try to hold in our hearts too.
I think we do ok.
Here are some faves, what are yours?
