Musically, the album draws inspiration from\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eBritish Invasion-era\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003erock music\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eand\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003epunk rock. Following the release of\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003eBee Thousand\u003c\/em\u003e, the band began to attract interest from other record labels, eventually signing with\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eMatador\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003efor their next album.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eUnlike some of the band's earlier releases,\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003eBee Thousand\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003ewas not recorded in a\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003estudio, but rather on\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003efour-track machines\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eor other primitive home recording devices in the garages and basements of various band members. Moreover, many of the\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003edemo\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003etakes of the songs were the ones that were used for the album. Due in part to both of these factors, several unusual errors are present in the album's recording and mixing; for example, the guitar track drops out at one point in both \"Hardcore UFO's\" and “Mincer Ray”.\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eThe band's choice to use inexpensive recording devices was initially a matter of economics, but eventually the band grew to prefer the sound. Pollard said that:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e...For our first [EP],\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003eForever Since Breakfast\u003c\/em\u003e, we went into a studio and created a very mediocre recording out of a very sterile environment. I thought, \"\u003cem\u003eFuck that\u003c\/em\u003e. If we're paying for it and no one's listening to these records anyway, if we're only making them for ourselves, then I'm going to put exactly what I want on them.\"\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eKevin Fennell\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003esimilarly said, \"When\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003eBee Thousand\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003ecame out we sounded much less professional than we did in 1982.
