The elusive Sault – possibly the most important group of 2020 – have successfully combined a mysterious aura with some of the most forward thinking, funk-drenched music of now. It’s a sonically rewarding stew, with a louche, loping groove permeating and gang vocals over-seeing. Most of the tracks are built up from heavy, wonderfully played live drum tracks that recall Questlove’s work with D’Angelo combined with analogue synth basslines before vocalisations provided by Cleo Sol and Melisa Young. The result is a glorious mix of Afro-funk, cosmically natured groove and conscious soulful vocals.
