The absolute freedom of Richard Youngs’s music (and career path) has led to some unexpected destinations. When his 38th official solo album landed our good friend came up with the surprising goods. This time, Youngs had forgone both the acoustic guitar and synths he had been building in with to tool up with D-beats, over-blown distorted guitars and a de-construction of hardcore British punk music so complete it was too punk for the punks. One can imagine the isolated vocal tracks from “Barbed Wire…” being a beautiful listen on their own but the jarring, bloody context Youngs has battered them with creates a true apocalyptic cacophony. Youngs confounded again with this entertaining and brutal detour.
